One gateway, every direction

Which way will you go?

Every idea starts from Seattle: north to islands and Canada, west to the Olympic Peninsula, south to Rainier and Oregon, east over the Cascades, or farther by air and sea.

Seattle ↔ Bremerton on convention days

The Kitsap Conference Center sits on Bremerton's waterfront, a short walk from the ferry terminal.

  • State ferry (cars and walk-ons): Seattle–Bremerton takes about 60 minutes on the water. Vehicle space is first-come, first-served; arrive early on summer weekends.
  • Kitsap Transit fast ferry (passengers only): about 30 minutes to Seattle's Pier 50. It runs weekdays and summer Saturdays only, with no Sunday service, so on Sunday, July 11 plan on the state ferry.
  • Driving around: SEA Airport → Bremerton via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge takes roughly 1¼–2 hours; the bridge is tolled eastbound.
  • Best pairing: Olympic Peninsula trips start well from Bremerton with no ferry. For north, east and south trips, transfer back to the Seattle side first.

Canada: check every traveller

Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, Banff, Jasper and every Alaska cruise from Seattle (it calls at Victoria) involve Canada.

  • Indian passport holders (without a U.S. green card) need a Canadian visitor visa (TRV), even on a cruise that only stops in Victoria and even if they stay on board. Apply months ahead.
  • U.S. green-card holders: no visa or eTA needed; carry your passport and green card.
  • U.S. citizens: no visa needed; a passport is simplest.
  • H-1B, H-4, F-1 and other visa holders: check your U.S. return. Automatic visa revalidation covers some trips of 30 days or less to Canada, with conditions; do not apply for a new U.S. visa while in Canada.
  • Rental cars: confirm the company allows driving into Canada.

July is beautiful, and popular

  • No major Seattle event is scheduled for July 10–11, 2027, but it is peak cruise and holiday season. Book hotels and park lodging early.
  • Mount Rainier: no timed-entry reservation was required in 2026 and none has been announced for 2027. Check again in spring 2027.
  • Olympic: no timed entry. Hurricane Ridge has restrooms but no food or water. Midday waits at the Hoh Rain Forest can reach 2 hours, so arrive before 8 am or after 5 pm.
  • Multnomah Falls: in summer 2026, the I-84 parking lot needed a $2 timed permit from 9 am to 6 pm. Check the 2027 dates.
  • Moraine Lake (Banff): reachable only by shuttle or tour; reserve seats when they open in spring.
  • North Cascades Highway: normally open by mid-May. Wildfire smoke can affect east-side plans in July and August.

Park passes & fees

  • America the Beautiful annual pass: $80 for U.S. residents, $250 for non-residents (since 2026). It covers everyone in the pass holder's car.
  • Visiting parents from abroad: since 2026, non-U.S. residents aged 16+ pay a $100 surcharge per person at 11 busy parks, including Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades, Denali and Kenai Fjords are not on the list. Riding with a family member who holds an annual pass covers the whole car.
  • Entry fees: Mount Rainier and Olympic $30 per vehicle (7 days); North Cascades and Kenai Fjords free; Denali $15 per person.
  • Washington State Parks (Deception Pass, Lake Wenatchee, Cape Disappointment, Lime Kiln): Discover Pass, $10 a day or $45 a year plus fees.
  • Oregon State Parks (Fort Stevens, Oswald West, Cape Meares and more): day-use parking permit, $12 a day for out-of-state visitors ($10 for Oregon residents).
  • Cape Flattery: $20 Makah Recreation Pass per vehicle. Banff and Jasper: Parks Canada daily admission.

Make the days add up

Total holiday = arrival buffer + miLni (2 days) + trip days + a night near SEA before flying home.

Example: arrive Thu, Jul 8 → settle in Bremerton Fri, Jul 9 → miLni Sat–Sun, Jul 10–11 → 3-day Olympic trip Mon–Wed, Jul 12–14 → fly home Thu, Jul 15.
  • Trips before the convention should end by Friday, July 9, with that night in Bremerton.
  • Trips after the convention start Monday, July 12; the guide never assumes you leave midway through a convention day.
  • Stay in Seattle the night before a cruise, and avoid a same-day ferry or long drive before a major flight.
  • Prices vary too much to quote this far ahead. Budget separately for lodging, rental car, ferries, park fees and activities.

Comfort for every generation

  • Vegetarian food is easy in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond and Bothell, home to many South Indian restaurants and Indian grocery stores. It is scarce near national parks and small towns, so pack lunches, fruit and snacks for long days.
  • Easy viewpoints for elders: the Snoqualmie Falls deck, Diablo Lake Overlook, Vista House, Paradise's paved paths, Butchart Gardens and the cruise deck.
  • Layers: mountain viewpoints can be 15–25°F cooler than Seattle and the coast can be foggy, while east of the Cascades can be hot.
  • Long daylight: mid-July sunset is around 9 pm in Seattle and near midnight in Anchorage.
  • Download offline maps: phone signal drops on the Olympic coast, the North Cascades, the Icefields Parkway and in Alaska.
